Image and Video Coding

Our research group has made significant improvements to several image coding and compression algorithms, and developed new techniques for video coding.

Projects: Rate Control for Video Coding and Communication, Source Modeling and Coding Control, Vector Set Partitioning for Image and Video Coding, Image and Video Compression

Digital Signal Processing

The laboratory has a long history in digital signal processing research.  This section summarizes several recent efforts in digital filter bank design, discrete transformations, and nonlinear image filtering methods.

Projects:  Quadrature Mirror Filter Bank Design, Optimum Subband Coder Design, Impulse Noise Removal, Warped Discrete Fourier Transform, Correction of Geometric Lens Distortions

Perceptual Image and Video Processing

Human vision characteristics are important for both designing and rating the performance of image and video processing algorithms.  Our research in this area includes psychophysical experiments on video quality, the design of performance metrics for video algorithms, and color processing techniques.

Projects:  Perceptual Video Assessment, Color Enhancement and Re-Rendition, Color Image Filtering

Color Image Segmentation

In this project we have investigated both supervised and unsupervised color image segmentation problems, and have developed a number of new algorithms.

Image Texture Analysis

In this project, applications of dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) in texture description and texture based image retrieval were investigated.
